Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a form of psychotherapy incorporating a mental health professional, an equine specialist, and horses.

Why use horses?

Horses are herd animals. They are considered animals of prey and as such are easily frightened, naturally claustrophobic and extremely wary of the unfamiliar. Horses live in the moment and provide immediate, unfiltered & honest feedback to those in their presence. With a heightened sensitivity to human emotions, horses challenge us to stay congruent with our feelings when relating with them. In return, horses offer us nonjudgmental, honest feedback and teach us to be more aware of the connections between mind, body, and emotions, all the while, using breath and body sensations to pave the way to an increased awareness of the self, the environment and different ways to relate to others.

EAP uses horses experientially for emotional growth & healing. Interactive ground based horse-centered activities replace traditional “talk therapy” sessions.

EAP is suitable for people of all ages and abilities including (but not limited to) those who experience autism spectrum disorder, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), attention-deficit disorder or ADHD, anxiety, stress, neglect, anger, eating disorders, depression, grief and loss, chemical dependency, trauma, PTSD, emotional and behavioral issues, and relationship challenges.

EAP has proven to have a profound impact on individuals, couples, families, and groups while assisting participants to reconnect with emotions and to own their feelings.  In a safe environment, participants are provided an opportunity to step into an experience that will help facilitate their ability to 'see' their behaviors and how those behaviors impact self and others. All activities are completed on the ground.  No horseback riding or knowledge of horses required.
