Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) uses experiential ground based horse-centered activities to address specific learning needs & goals. EAL incorporates the use of a mental health professional, an equine specialist, and horses.

Why use horses?

Horses are large, powerful, imposing and expressive.  They are also very social and they communicate their moods by nonverbal and verbal behaviors. Horses have presence and we instinctively pay attention to what they have to say. However, in spite of their size, we also generally feel a natural desire to treat them with care. So, beginning with this effective combination of awareness and consideration, the stage is set for a positive learning experience.

When amongst horses, we mimic displays of equine affection while grooming and petting them and in turn the horses transfer ways of being in the herd to being around people.

As participants work with their horses through the specially designed EAL/EAP exercises, they gain a better understanding of the horse's body language. This understanding leads to an awareness of how their own actions cause the horse's reactions. Participants learn that greater success can be achieved by adjusting their actions to be more in harmony with their equine partners. They see how a positive change in their behaviour causes a positive change in the horse's reaction. This clear link between action and reaction is so compelling because it awakens participants to the effect that their behaviour has on others. This insight empowers them to use their new found life skills and social skills to affect positive change in their own lives. All activities are completed on the ground.  No horseback riding or knowledge of horses required.
